USA Karate National Coach Ken Ferguson
Ken Ferguson fought his way onto the United States AAU Karate Team in 1975 being the first AAU National Champion. From 1975 through to 1992 he represented the USA in international competition including the World Championships in Long Beach, Ca., Madrid, Spain, Taipei, Taiwan, Cairo, Egypt, and Mexico City, Mexico and Pan American Championships in Curacao, New Orleans, and Rio de Janeiro.
Ferguson was a constant threat in competition and placed either 1st or 2nd in every AAU or USAKF National Championships from 1977 to 1992 when he retired from international competition. He fought on USA Karate teams at good will events in Costa Rico and a good will tour to South Africa. He fought, toured, and roomed with notable competitors and martial artists Tokey Hill and Billy Blanks.
During his competitive years he gained experience and knowledge from USA Team coaches such as Noel Smith, Ron Marchini, Chuck Merriman, Don Madden. Thomas LaPuppet, and Robert Saal. Ferguson was well respected in the open tournament seen as well winning at USKA, AKA, Ohio State and other local and national championships. Not only did he compete in karate competition but his versatile fighting style enabled him to win an AAU Taekwondo silver medal in 1978 in Washington, DC.
For the last thirty-five years, Ferguson has touched and enriched the lives of thousands of inner city youth in Cleveland, Ohio, through the martial arts. Several of these youth have won national titles in their divisions with three of them making the USA Karate team. Ferguson was inducted into the USA Karate Hall of Fame in 1993. He carried the Olympic Torch in 1996 when the torch passed through Cleveland, Ohio.
